Literature Review on Immigrants in Canada and their Economic and General Well Being

This literature review by Dr. David Ma reveals that immigrants to Canada, particularly visible minorities, singles, and those in metropolitan areas, experience higher poverty rates, with 20% facing chronic poverty. They encounter significant challenges to entering the job market such as credential barriers and the “lack of Canadian experience,” emphasizing the importance of early intervention for long-term economic well-being. Canadian immigrants are also experiencing the negative impacts of ethnic enclaves. While they provide social support, these enclaves can also hinder overall upward mobility, posing additional cultural and poverty-related challenges for immigrants.
